A trademark is any word, phrase, symbol, or design that identifies and distinguishes the source of goods from one company versus others. In contrast, a service mark identifies the source of a service rather than a physical product.
The Trade Marks Registry (TMR), part of Pakistan’s Intellectual Property Organization (IPO), manages the registration of trademarks and service marks under the Trademarks Ordinance, 2001. This federal body operates within Pakistan and functions as a civil court, with decisions appealable in provincial high courts. Led by a Registrar, the TMR’s main office is in Karachi, with a regional office in Lahore.
Key Functions of the Trade Marks Registry
The TMR has broadened its role to include raising awareness about intellectual property rights alongside its primary function of registering trademarks. It encourages businesses to protect their trademarks, promoting fair business practices.

- Post Registration Section: Manages amendments, address changes, and ownership transfers for registered marks.
- Renewal Section: Manages the 10-year renewal process, issuing certificates after receiving the required TM-12 fee.
