Lahore’s “Green Lockdown” Enforced to Tackle Rising Smog Crisis

LAHORE (GEARUP PAKISTAN) – In response to Lahore’s escalating smog crisis, which recently reached an alarming 708 on the Air Quality Index (AQI), the Punjab Environmental Department has announced a “Green Lockdown” in targeted areas across the city.

The Environmental Department’s notification designates several hotspot zones for immediate restrictions, including Davis Road, Egerton Road, Durand Road, Kashmir Road, as well as Shimla Hill to Gulshan Cinema and Abbott Road. Areas from Shimla Hill to the Railway Station, Empress Road, and Queen Mary Road and its vicinity have also been marked as critical zones.

To combat the hazardous pollution levels, the lockdown bans all construction activities within these hotspots. Additionally, commercial generators are prohibited, Chingchi rickshaws are barred from operating, and open barbecues will be restricted after 8 pm to reduce particulate emissions.

Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of fostering “climate diplomacy” with India to jointly address the severe air quality issues. Speaking at a Diwali event in Lahore, she highlighted the need for cross-border cooperation, proposing a dialogue with the Indian Punjab chief minister. “This is not just a political issue but a humanitarian one,” she said, underlining the urgency of collaborative action.

The “Green Lockdown” marks a significant step by the Punjab government to curb pollution and improve air quality in Lahore, while discussions of regional collaboration signal a broader commitment to addressing environmental challenges.
