Commerce Minister Optimistic About Pakistan’s Textile and Leather Industries’ Global Competitiveness

KARACHI: Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan expressed optimism on Wednesday regarding the future of Pakistan’s textile and leather sectors, predicting their rise as globally competitive industries through collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Speaking as the chief guest at the opening of the fifth International Textiles and Leather Flagship Exhibition (Texpo) at the Expo Centre, Karachi, the minister highlighted the importance of the event, which runs from October 23 to 25.

Joined by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Kareem Kundi, and Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Chairman Zubair Motiwala, Mr. Khan performed the digital inauguration of Texpo 2024.

“This exhibition serves as a great platform to reinforce existing partnerships and build new ones, ensuring mutual growth and success for all stakeholders,” said Mr. Khan.

He emphasized the need for value addition and product diversification, particularly in non-cotton apparel, performance wear, technical textiles, sportswear, high-fashion shoes, and leather accessories. The minister also stressed the importance of adopting a circular economy model and utilizing sustainable materials in production.

“We are advancing design capabilities by transitioning from physical samples to 3D prototypes, and creating premium products for international markets,” Mr. Khan added.

The minister highlighted the Commerce Ministry’s commitment to supporting businesses through the Export Development Fund (EDF), which provides financial assistance in key areas such as trade promotion, marketing, infrastructure development, skill enhancement, and compliance with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Mr. Khan expressed confidence in the sectors’ future, citing sustainability, innovation, and digitization as critical elements for success. He pointed to the growing use of eco-friendly methods and investment in modern technologies to position Pakistan as a leader in sustainable production.

“Pakistan is spearheading digital transformation across supply chains and e-commerce, opening up new opportunities for growth,” he said. The minister also mentioned the country’s ambitions to set benchmarks in environmentally responsible manufacturing and ethical labor practices.

Texpo 2024 stands as a milestone event, showcasing Pakistan’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in its textile and leather industries, with a vision of driving the country’s global competitiveness.
